Recommended Interventions for Snoring Prevention
Snoring can be very irritating to people with snoring partners and yet one of the most common occurrences around the world. This condition is quite common among the elderly population. Otherwise, one of the reasons behind snoring lies in, when people sleep the throat muscles tend to relax and as the air passes over the mouth’s palate it results to vibrations that produce the snoring sound. Interestingly, the snoring partners are barely aware of their snoring condition thus disturbing the one without the condition.

Statistics do indicate that snoring is more common with men than women although the chances of snoring increase with age. Fascinatingly, people in their thirties, about 5% of women snore and about 20% of men have this occurrence and by the age of 60 at least 40% of women snore and 60% of men who snore. This occurrence usually happens at the third stage of sleeping known as the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) stage or the dreaming stage otherwise, snoring usually starts at any time during sleep.

On the other hand, there are many remedies to snoring prevention but most of them are non-medical otherwise, medical attention is necessary if it is a medical condition that is causing the snoring. For instance, if the reason behind snoring is because of nasal congestion the doctors will give a decongestant to unblock the nose. There are also other interventions used in snoring prevention and some of these interventions include:

  • Some doctors recommend a mouth guard for snoring prevention to snoring patients where it holds the upper and lower teeth together while the patient is sleeping.
  • A surgery may be performed for patients with overgrown adenoids or a deviated septum with most advanced surgery being the use of a laser resection.
  • For self-help it is advisable to sleep on the side or on your stomach if the main cause of snoring is because of sleeping on the back. You may also consider sewing a tennis ball on the back pocket of your pajamas to discourage you from rolling over during sleep.
  • You can also try elevating your head by putting something under your mattress such as wood blocks, or bricks under each leg of the head of your bed.
  • It is also important to ensure that you breathe in fresh air by vacuuming your sleeping room and ensure it is free of dust or other allergens that can cause nasal congestion or breathing problems. Otherwise, a cold-mist humidifier will assist in snoring prevention by preventing the nasal passage from drying.
